What Age is Too Late to Start Gymnastics?

What Age is Too Late to Start Gymnastics?

The optimal age to begin gymnastics is under 12. The earlier a child begins getting involved in the training, the higher the likelihood of success. Teens past 12 will find that if they are just beginning at an older age, there is a lot of practice and work that they will have to make up for, but not enough time to quickly achieve it, thus recreational gymnastics may be better off for them.

What Are the Basic Gymnastic Activities?

Basic Gymnastic Activities

Prior to accomplishing Olympic Gold Medal-worthy skills, a lot of practice must take place. There are basics to gymnastics that we must master first prior to being ready for competing. We must remember that gymnastics can be dangerous, so we at all times want to keep in mind the health and readiness of our bodies before stepping out to flip and tumble.

Some of the basic gymnastics’ activities include: a handstand, a cast, the splits, a handspring on the vault, a back handspring, a round-off, a turn on one-foot, a split-leap, and a tap on swing bars. A cast is basically the body formation prior the doing a handstand onto the bar. A roundoff is essentially tumbling with precision after doing a back handspring off the bar. A split-leap is the twirling and twisting done on a bar before jumping off to tumble and complete a round-off. These activities help a gymnast develop balance and agility, as well as flexible and gracious motions ideal for flipping and vaulting, tumbling, and remaining strong.

Final thoughts

Our kids can have so much energy, it’s amazing how their energy truly never seems to run out at times. With that said, it is a great time to involve our little ones in gymnastics at an early age. Gymnastics is not only geared towards Olympic competition, but it can also teach our children important life lessons like how to respect others, how to adopt sportsmanship, self-discipline, and self-esteem. Mental, emotional, and physical health are bolstered through Olympics. It’s never too late for one to do recreational Olympics, but if we are ready to encourage the making of a prodigy, the time to get our toddlers tumbling is now.
